How to make Venmo private and delete your account

Venmo’s default settings made transactions public for years — your payment history and friends list may still be visible to anyone.

Fix the privacy leak first (do this even if you keep the account)

1. Settings → Privacy → set the default to Private.
2. Settings → Privacy → Past transactions → change all to private.
3. Settings → Privacy → Friends list → set to private and turn off appearing in others’ friends lists.

Close the account

1. Transfer out your balance first.
2. Settings → Account → Close my Venmo account.
3. Transaction records are retained by law for financial compliance.
